Like a Knife Beneath The Water

Tweezy here with some perfect songs for your lazy sunday with a headache. Stumbled across this song from Portand, Oregon's White Hinterland. The minimal beat and echoing female vocals meld perfectly with the steady bassline thumping quietly throughout the track.

This next one is from Texas producer Bryce Isbell. "Haunted" is a slow motion, layered track with more going on every time you listen. (Think glo-fi meets funky drums and you might get the picture.) Isbell collaborates with Neon Indian's Alan Palomo on his latest album DEFINITELY check it out.

Here's a standout cover of MJ's classic "Human Nature" from favorite Toro y Moi. Different than most of Toro's songs this one is a fairly straightforward take on the original with vocals that are very close to perfect. This one is a keeper.

To end things, here's a classic song from 80's indie band The Wedding Present. I  just recently got my hands on the NME C86 tape (look it up if you dont know what it is) And this is one of the standout tracks. Absolutely driving, perfectly lo-fi. Worth all the time it took to find, definitely keep this in your rotation

Untzing Around the World

All this snow has gotten me a tad down and I can't help but thinking of hitting the road. Like my other Untz compadres, I am generally pulled to wherever super sonic jams are being played.

"Paris is really coming out with some great tunes lately", I said to myself this morning or perhaps London, so I grabbed the Untz Blimp (Pictured above) and went to London.

Here I paid homage to the great Rod Stewart. But Rod was tired and needed a break so he had this great band with a French name from Brooklyn stop in to cover one of his slickest jams.

Au Revoir Simone - Young Turks (The Disco Pusher Remix)

My only requirement in paris was seeing Breakbot, but we also listened to this other slick jam

Shout out Louds - Fall Hard (Breakbot Remix)

Coer De Pirates - Comes Des Enfants

Finally I was in the mood for Vodka, so we blimped on to Russia.

IAMX - Nightlife (Russian Adults Remix)

After little trip we settled down back in America with some classic Kool and the Gang

Kool and the Gang - Mother Earth

My Holy Ghost Trip....

There's something to be said for a disco production duo who record with all live instruments and vintage synths. DFA's Holy Ghost! have been churning out remixes for the likes of Phoenix, Cut Copy, MGMT, and Panthers for years; not to mention producing a few knockout tracks of their own. This past week the duo released a cover of "On Board" by Friendly Fires, giving it the DFA disco touch with a thumping bassline and spacey synths echoing throughout.

Friendly Fires Returned the favor, covering Holy Ghost's classic "Hold On." They keep the song structure the same but beef up the production with some interesting synth and drum work, definitely worth a few listens.

BONUS:
Here are some old Holy Ghost remix favorites.
The duo turn this track by Phoenix into disco magic, the repetitive synths and organic drums meld perfectly with the vox

Here's their remix of "Goblin City" by Panthers; a simple echoing dubbed out jam that is dancefloor perfection, get your boogie on indeed.

High Delight

For those of you that love Cut Copy check out this remix, it's rife with soulful buildups, dreamy vocals, and glimmering dance floor ready beats.

If someone were ever to make a movie about my life, I would want this to play during the end credits.

This band has been described as a west-coast Grizzly Bear, while descriptions like that are normally stupid, it works in the case of Local Natives, as they take a similar approach to harmony heavy folk pop but infuse it with some California sun.

Dark new-wavey dance track from Cale Parks' new band. They're playing with Sleigh Bells at The Mill on April 3rd, hot damn.

Because I felt like it.

This is a link to the video on youtube. This song is a few years old but the video is too damn good not to share, its like if you combined an 80's infomercial with "Little Shop of Horrors"

Sunday Funk - Day

What makes a beautiful day even better - Funk music of course. Feel free to start slow grinding all day long to these fresh tracks

Coupled with a hearty breakfast - this jam can start the day off right

6th Borough Project - Do it To the Max

A tender love song for those who share a love of slick grooves

Hoochie Coo - Ain't nothing like you

For proper listening please play this while driving a Cadillac

Hot Chocolate - Cadillac (The revenge re-edit)

Marvin Gaye - Need I say more. This is just about the catchiest tune I have heard in a while.

Marvin Gaye - Heavy Love Affair (The Revenge Rework)

The 80s never seem to stop producing sweet jams

West India Company - Thieves of our lovers lives

Blancmange Game Above My Head

Gunstar has a very cool thing going on in this song.

Gunstar - The Dream Machine

Good night and Good Luck

All I Can Do Is Daydream

It's friday morning and the headache won't seem to go away. The only answer is music that transports you to a bleached out polaroid of a 1984 beach and makes the sun shine on you even in the dead of winter. This track from mystery band Feathers came out a while back, but didn't reach the popularity of their first single. "Small Rooms" is a perfect blend of dreamy vocals over a driving, danceable beat that is perfect beach day magic.

Up next is a song from a band I know literally nothing about. The song speaks for itself though, it's a catchy and laid back downtempo tune that is sure to get heads nodding.

So I've been into Sweden's Sally Shapiro for quite some time now, her italo-disco sound and breathy voice are pure sex. Here's "Miracle" a track that is sure to please all.

Now to finish off this post, here's the best little piece of glo-fi daydream magic that I have heard in quite some time. The ambien dripping loops and unintelligible vocals meld with a repetitive synth riff that makes for pure escapism.

Tune in. Lay back. Crank it up. Feel it everywhere.

How Do I Reach These Keedz?

Keedz is a hard act to understand. Is it Justice trying to release a track under a different alias? Is it a new group that samples something that sounds like Justice? As it turns out, this band remains a mystery, even though the song was released a few years back. All I know is this track rocks the shit.

This next track grooves. It's slow and steady and definitely wins the race.

This is one of my favorite songs of the year so far. Van She takes a good song and makes it latenight gold with a perfect driving pulse blended with poppy and dreamlike overtones.

"Ohhh bra, I just totally stomped that tweaked 1040 tailspin." That's what I think of when I hear this song. This one's for Bacon, the bro-iest bro I know.

I guess this track falls in the wonderful and white-hot genre of glo-fi. If you don't understand what glo-fi is, eat a bar of Xanax and go sailing on a perfectly sunny Cape Cod day in August.

After looking at Hypem's 2009 Zeitgeist, I realized how much of an impact Phoenix had on music last year. I found myself listening to songs I know and love by them a lot this month. This remix is a perfect blend of familiarity and innovation.

The forceful synth, which is pedaled throughout this track, invokes feelings of utter joy. I cannot help but smile when hearing this beautiful song.

Here's another rockin' remix of a track by The XX. You cannot help but groove to the arpeggiating synth, which acts as an outstanding backbone for this jam.

Trinity College is rocking the shit out of pop culture right now. Here's new hotness: Alex Kluger ('08) is now DJing under the name Alpha Kilos. Here's his mashup of Fleet Foxes vs. Outkast vs. Lil' Wayne.

Spotlight: Tanlines

For those of you who don't know, Tanlines have been around as a band/production duo for quite some time and they have been tearing shit up. Blending synth pop sounds with island drums and tribal rhythms they have created a sound all their own. They are releasing a new 6 track EP, Settings this March. Honestly cannot wait for this one. For those in the Connecticut area they will be playing a show at The Warehouse on March 6th with Washed Out and Small Black. This show should be unreal, and all should attend. Here is the first single from the new EP,  along with an older track "Bejan," enjoy.

JEMZ

At about 5am yesterday I woke up to the ecstatic moans and squeaking springs of a young Italian woman, clearly in the throes of absolute pleasure. I damned to hell the thin walls of my building and resigned myself to the breaking day. Looking out over Los Angeles, the city glimmering orange and blue from a smoggy sunrise, it dawned on me: Today is Valentine's Day. To the rhythmic Ai Ai Ai of my presumably gorgeous neighbor I resolved to track down some appropriate love beats to drown out the occasion.

The Paradise - In Love With You

Uffie: MC's Can Kiss, Pop The Glock (DJ Mehdi remix)

Old-school soul is my favorite style of music and this duo from Denmark know what they are doing:

Quadron: Pressure (Vimeo), Slippin'

Some Laid-back lover's beats

Ed Banger 7th

This past friday, some of your favorite bloggers were in NY for Ed Banger Records 7th anniversary party. A night to be remembered (or not) to say the least. Busy P, Breakbot, Justice and DJ Mehdi tore shit up and A-Trak, Feadz, and Uffie made guest appearances. A-Trak's set was exceptionally good, check out the video below of his intro. Shit starts to get real around 3 minutes into the video. If you're not into lots of noise/intro scratching skip to the 3:00 minute mark and watch A-Trak drop his heads will roll remix. You will wish you were there.

New Baby Monster

Longtime favorite blog Big Stereo has decided to start releasing material on Big Stereo Records. The first single is this new jam from Baby Monster, titled "She Comes Alive" and it is coming out on limited edition vinyl on March 29. The track is up here for your download pleasure. For those not familiar with Baby Monster, GET FAMILIAR. This song is ridiculously catchy.

Just to get some more Baby Monster into your lives, here is "Curses" another track from them that is seriously in the running for one of my favorite songs of last year.

GILA MONSTER

Gila monster |ˈhēlə| - A venomous lizard native to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. ORIGIN late 19th cent.: named after Gila, a river in New Mexico and Arizona.

Groove Armada - Paper Romance

This jam starts off ominously with what sounds like a giant alien stomping on a keyboard. Then the brooding lyrics jump in and you can't decide whether this song is an upper or a downer. The spaceship exhaust noise is offset with electronic steel drums and the chorus, which is the focus of the song. This song is subtle but it booms.

Priors - What You Need (Original)

So we've all heard the GRUM and DCUP remixes of this song. Frankly, I think this original is way better. Maybe I'm just grummed out. This song is catchy and makes your head nod.

LectroLips - Kiss This (Electric Garden Remix)

This is some sweet electro. Good for the floor or the car. Get it.

MVSEVM - French Jeans (Dada Life Remix)

Volume must be turned up. This is a great dance jam. It's loud, fast and has a great groove to it. It has all the elements necessary of a good house song. Check out other Dada Life Remix numbers like the cut of "Handguns" by Alex Gopher.

Friendly Fires - Bored of Each Other

It's been a while since I've listened to any Friendly Fires. I felt the need to post since the DJ threw some on at the bar on Saturday night and then my friend blasted some late night. Good tune. Very mellow and instrumental at times. Not a song for raging, but good listening nonetheless.

Caribou - Odessa

This song has been kicking around hype machine a lot the last few weeks. I dig this song. It's creepy and mellow with some good rhythm. It is reminiscent of Fujiya & Miyagi or The Greenskeepers. It's creepy and basically lacks any identifiable instruments. There's something to be said about combining a bunch of discordant noises and turning them into something catchy.

Mr Nô - He or She

This is a sweet jam I found on discodemons. It's very 80's revival beginning with a New Order sound in the beginning and then it transitions into some progressive type electronica. This one won't be for everyone. Not a lot to it but sometimes simple is all you need.

Pau y Amigos - Fiesta Permanente - Pau y Bufi

This is my foreign track for the week. Another song on the chill side. I love it. Imagine some latin woman seducing you with her haunting voice while the guy from The New Wine is playing the keyboard from "Revolving cylinders" in the background.

Javelin - STD Fury

I like this Brooklyn based group. Weird music with enough catchy to make it listenable. While the subject matter of this particular song is disturbing, it is entertaining. "Crabs, scabies, syphillis, rabies, crazy shit be on your labies." Wrap it up. This is song reminds me of songs by the wild girl trash techno group Avenue D. Catch other songs like "Lindsay Brohan".

We Have A Band - You Came Out

Sweet Indie tune. It has whistling for catchiness like 'Young Folks' combined with CSS type female lyrics all topped off with some angry electric bass and indie drums. The music video is cool and creepy too.

Make The Girl Dance - Kill Me (Audrey Katz Remix)

This song is fucking everywhere so we may as well put it up too. The original is rowdy. However, I wasn't a huge fan of the other recut floating around the blogosphere. This french group is sure to be overplayed for months to come.

Nil - Ma Disconica (Mondkopf Remix)

Threw this on there for you hardcore rave junkies.

Hide Me

The Golden Filter just dropped their latest single "Hide Me" and this shit is a fantastic breath of fresh air. It's breathier than some of their previous efforts, losing the intensity of older tracks but gaining a great dreamy feel.

Here's "Thunderbird" an older song from them:

Toro y Moi/Body Language

Just scooped up a few new "chillwave/glo-fi/whatever the fuck chilled out name you have for it now" jams this afternoon. With the afternoon sun coming in through the window these two songs are proving to be the perfect soundtrack. Toro y Moi just finished up a remix for Brooklyn based Body Language, and vice versa.
Toro y Moi's remix of "At a Glance" is true to his usual production form, layered, breathy. Head nod inspiring drums bang behind the looped vocals and synth washes, I actually enjoy this more than many of Toro's own tracks.

This next song is Body Language's remix of "Timed Pleasure" by Toro y Moi. Body Language turns this into a sunshine pop gem. The beat is basic and the song seems to wander around any specific groove but that makes it all the more great. Definitely keep this one in your rotation.

What You Need

Here's a couple of tracks to get you through your sunday.  The Touch are an Australian band currently working on a few new tracks, this remix of their song "Shot" by fellow Australian Youth is a great chilled out disco gem centered around an amazing marimba riff, definitely listen. Perfect for washed out days in the sun.

This next little gem is actually pretty old, I remember rocking out to it years ago when Clipse were dropping mixtapes like it was nothing. Diplo turns their track "Queen Bitch" into magic.

Chicago's Hey Champ have been tearing things up recently and this latest remix is no exception. Their take on "What You Need" by Priors is disco perfection, with some perfect little choppy vocals over a killer bassline and some 70s latenight string stabs. Dance dance.

OH SHIT

This new A-Trak joint is straight FIRE. A-Trak's rework of "Money to Blow" by Birdman, Drake and Lil Wayne is going to be featured on his followup album to 2007's Dirty South Dance. This is a club banger latenight track that is sure to please.

Show Me The Night

Got the monday morning blues? How about a healthy dose of jams to help?

Grum just served up this remix of LA kids Jump Jump Dance Dance  and this shit bumps for real. In true Grum fashion, this track makes me wish it was the weekend again already.

Now I usually don't dig mashups, but this next one is rad. The Dream's vocals fit almost perfectly over this Kris Menace track. Highly recommended.

Here's an old one that's been getting some play from me recently. Tittsworth's remix of "Thunderstruck" is a fresher take on the original and is choppy and rocking as we've come to expect from Tittsworth.
